Serious Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down I-485 Outer Loop Near West Boulevard

A major traffic disruption unfolded early Wednesday morning in Charlotte after a serious multi-vehicle accident shut down portions of Interstate 485 near Steele Creek Road.

According to preliminary reports, the crash occurred around 7:50 a.m. on the outer loop of Interstate 485 near mile marker 4 in Mecklenburg County.

Emergency responders, including multiple ambulances and law enforcement agencies, rushed to the scene following reports of a significant collision involving several vehicles.

Authorities confirmed that the I-485 outer loop near West Boulevard was temporarily shut down as crews worked to assist victims, investigate the crash, and clear the roadway.

Motorists in the area experienced major delays Wednesday morning as traffic quickly backed up near the Steele Creek Road corridor.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene with damaged vehicles scattered across lanes while emergency personnel moved rapidly between cars assisting those involved.

“There were ambulances everywhere, and traffic was completely stopped,” one commuter said. “It looked really serious.”

At this time, officials have not confirmed the number of people injured or the severity of any injuries sustained in the crash.

Tow trucks and emergency crews remained on scene for an extended period while authorities worked to reopen the affected lanes safely.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, seek alternate routes, and expect heavy delays throughout the morning commute.
