Dartford River Crossing Closed Following Fatal Welfare Incident on Bridge

A major emergency response unfolded Monday evening at the Dartford River Crossing after police responded to concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge.

According to Essex Police, the incident was first reported shortly before 5 p.m., prompting authorities to shut down sections of the crossing while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Multiple emergency services, including police and specialist response teams, were dispatched to the bridge as officers attempted to safely resolve the situation.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area as long traffic delays and congestion quickly developed around the crossing and nearby roadways due to the closure.

Officials later confirmed that the incident ended in tragedy after the man reportedly died at the scene.

Witnesses described seeing a heavy emergency presence near the crossing, with police vehicles, response teams, and traffic diversions remaining in place for several hours while authorities managed the incident.

In a statement issued during the response, Essex Police said:

“A road closure is currently in place at the Dartford River Crossing as multiple emergency services respond to concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge.”

Authorities also thanked members of the public for their patience and understanding as the response continued throughout the evening.

The incident caused significant disruption for commuters travelling through the Dartford Crossing corridor, one of the busiest transport routes connecting Kent and Essex.

Police have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
