Brick Memorial High School Student Jackson Mueller Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash Near School

The Brick Township community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Jackson Mueller, a student-athlete at Brick Memorial High School who was killed Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run crash near the school.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal crash occurred around 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of Lanes Mill Road and Rhode Island Avenue.

Police responding to the scene discovered a juvenile bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle that fled the area. The victim, later identified as Jackson Mueller, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said investigators later determined that a 2021 BMW travelling northbound on Lanes Mill Road at a high rate of speed struck Mueller as he rode westbound on Rhode Island Avenue through a marked crosswalk.

Officials stated the driver allegedly fled without stopping to render aid or notify police.

The investigation was conducted by members of the prosecutor’s office major crime unit-vehicular homicide squad alongside the Brick Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office crime scene investigation unit.

Investigators later identified the driver as a juvenile. Authorities confirmed the suspect was taken into custody and charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death.

The juvenile is currently being held at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center. Under New Jersey law, additional information regarding juveniles charged with delinquent acts cannot be publicly released.

The tragedy has devastated students, teachers, coaches, and families throughout the Brick Township School District.

In a statement first reported by Brick Patch, district officials expressed grief over the loss.

“This morning there was an accident that resulted in a tragedy for Brick Schools. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the student,” the district stated.

“This is an incredibly sad and tragic event for our community, and we need to support one another during this difficult time.”

School officials confirmed grief counselling and emotional support services are being made available for students and staff impacted by the tragedy.

According to NJ MileSplit records, Jackson Mueller was listed as a student-athlete at Brick Memorial High School with an expected graduation year of 2029.

Friends and classmates remembered Jackson as an athletic and kindhearted young student whose sudden death has left the entire school community in shock.

Traffic along Lanes Mill Road near the high school remained closed for several hours Tuesday morning as investigators processed the scene.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer praised investigators and local law enforcement agencies for their response and work throughout the investigation.

Authorities emphasized that the charge remains an accusation, and the juvenile defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
