A 17-year-old boy drowned.

Teenager Dies After Drowning Incident at Rockaway Beach

A tragic water emergency unfolded Tuesday afternoon at Rockaway Beach after a 17-year-old boy drowned while swimming in the ocean near Beach 73rd Street and Shore Front Parkway.

According to Fire Department of the City of New York officials, emergency crews received reports around 3:30 p.m. of a missing swimmer in the water off the Queens’ shoreline.

Witnesses told responders they saw the teenager enter the ocean but never saw him return to shore.

Police sources said the teen had gone into the water with a friend when a powerful wave overtook both of them. Authorities said the friend was able to resurface and make it back safely, but the 17-year-old disappeared beneath the water.

A massive search operation was launched involving FDNY rescue swimmers, NYPD marine units, drones, and additional emergency personnel.

Witnesses described seeing rescue teams combing the shoreline and scanning the water as anxious beachgoers gathered nearby.

“There were helicopters, boats, and rescue crews everywhere,” one witness said. “People were hoping they would find him.”

Officials later confirmed that divers and marine crews searched extensively, though early rescue efforts initially yielded negative results.

One civilian with minor injuries was evaluated by EMS at the scene and declined medical transport, authorities said.

The search area was eventually turned over to the New York City Police Department as investigators continued recovery efforts.

Authorities later confirmed the teenager had died in the drowning incident.

The identity of the victim has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members.

The tragedy comes just days before New York City beaches are scheduled to begin full seasonal operations, with lifeguards not officially returning to duty until Saturday.

Officials continue urging residents and visitors to use extreme caution when entering the water, particularly when beaches are not staffed by lifeguards.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
